Have you been thinking of purchasing a Smartphone? This may be the perfect time as the market increasingly improves existing choices due to competition. Many are also available for free or cheaper than ever before.

The only problem with the above is that there are so many choices, especially if this is the buyer’s very first Smartphone. Following will be some tips on how to make this process more organized.

Listing: The first decision to consider is the features desired in a Smartphone. There are some that are geared to helping someone organize their daily life and tasks, others that place more importance on a large screen and its graphics quality, and some that offer lightning fast internet browsing. Some place significance on a high quality camera. There are also many Smartphones that include all of these options and more! Making a list will be easier after the desired features are determined.

<br />

Research: Visiting different provider’s stores and holding, touching, and even using the Smartphone that is being researched is still the best way to determine which one will win the contest. Talking to the salespeople can be very helpful as well. Many of them have their own Smartphones, and they probably have been through several different kinds and brands, as they get to test them out before the public does. Most of them will be quite willing to give an honest review and opinion of the ones that they like best and how they work. Finding the best deals can often be done easier in store as well.

Offer Searching: Checking different provider and manufacturer’s sites can result in finding some really great deals. Sometimes coupons are available to bring into the store to combine with a sale. There are also many sites that cater to new Smartphone buyers; these sites offer incredible deals on phones for signing a new contract, and these deals are usually much cheaper than the ones direct from the provider. Holidays usually prompt carriers to begin exclusive sales and discounts as well.

Warranty Details: The Smartphone should offer excellent warranty coverage. Are there stipulations in the buyer’s remorse period? Are there extra accessories that come with the phone, and are these covered too? Most phones are made overseas, so the reassurance of a warranty is a must. Without this protection, a buyer can get stuck with a malfunctioning Smartphone shortly after purchase. This is money and time wasted.

Research Carrier Plans: There are numerous plan options available with all of the major carriers. Some offer family plans, business plans, and individual plans. There are also data plan and unlimited messaging options available for heavy users. There is absolutely no reason to settle for a bad plan with expensive costs. This is not an issue in today’s modern Smartphone world.

By following the suggestions and tips offered here, a new Smartphone buyer can save time, hassle, and money. These things can also be used by a seasoned Smartphone user as well. Maybe it is time to move up to the latest model, or maybe an interest has been taken in a whole other direction with a completely different manufacturer. There are awesome deals currently in the cellular world, and these just keep getting better. This is largely due to the fact that many providers are offering cheaper and better deals on plans and phones alike. Thus, their competitors must rush to offer something better.

Take advantage of these reasons; using these and the given tips will get the buyer an awesome Smartphone or the seasoned Smartphone user a new and better upgrade.

Modern technology moves fast and furious, especially when it comes to capabilities of the smartphone. Just what is a “smartphone”? Actually there are no agreed upon or exact definitions for the term. Most would agree however that smartphones do more – much more – than what Alexander Graham Bell first envisioned when he invented the original telephone back in the 1870s.

Definition

The smartphone differs from ordinary mobile phones in that they are capable of advanced functionality because they contain software applications that can be run directly from the phone itself. This software is typically open-source, an advantage that makes adding applications as easy as loading them onto the phone via wireless downloads. Today, these devices are not considered very “smart” unless they can accomodate a datebook/calendar, advanced internet connectivity, photography, music and even video capability.

Origins

IBM was the first to venture into the business of offering consumers a highly advanced mobile phone. In 1993, the company introduced what could be considered the world’s smartphone – simply called Simon. Considered low-end by today’s standard, this first smartphone featured an amazing array of features – email, address book, clock, calendar, note pad, and even the ability to send and receive faxes.

During the mid-90′s, Nokia began to heat things up by introducing its first line of smartphone – the Nokia 9000 series. This phone was not only the first in a series of popular smart phones manufactured by Nokia, they were also the most expensive, coming in at 20-40% more costly than its rivals. The Nokia 9210 was indeed the first real and true smartphone due to its open operating system.

Cutting Edge Smart Phones

The 21st century has spawned smartphones that are incredibly powerful and easy to use. Touch-screen functionality has become the norm and manufacturers such as Apple, Nokia and Research in Motion are furiously vying for the smartphone consumer and business dollar.

Apple changed the smartphone industry with its introduction of the Apple iPhone in 2007. Nokia has since countered with the unveiling of its Nokia XPress Music Phone in 2008. The Nokia 5800 is a touch-screen lovers dream that includes just about every feature a user would want. The handset even comes with millions of downloadable music tracks at no cost. Google recently joined the fray by introducing it Android phone during the same time period.

The Future

Could the smartphone get any smarter than it already is? Sure can! In the not so distant future, virtually everyone on earth will be carrying some type of smartphone – devices that will make today’s handsets pale in comparison. Increased bandwidth and speed will allow phones to be able to handle video in real-time with no problem. In the future, these mobile handsets will be indispensable to daily life, used for a wide array of functions, including consumer purchases, banking, real-time video connectivity, advanced GPS tracking, entertainment and much more.

Smartphones are the latest must-haves for many people. Stationary work environments are a thing of the past as people are on the move and need to be able to take their work, family and friends with them. A smartphone is a new wave in cell phone technology that includes personal digital assistant capabilities too. They allow instant Internet access and have advanced features that are like a laptop.

Common Smartphone Features Includes: Cell phone, E-mail access, Organizer, Touch-screen with high-resolution, Camera, Global positioning system, Calendar, Contact database, Ability to read PDF files, Music player, Image viewer, Video player and Internet access

Computer Access from Cell Phones

The days of lugging around a large, weighted cell phone are gone. Today’s cell phones are slim, sleek and functional. Smartphones take that a step further and incorporate data management and computer use with cell phone technology. The idea has been well received and people are using smartphones for business and personal use.

The iphone is Apple’s latest and highly popular version of the smartphone. Other brands include Blackberry, Windows Mobile, Symbian, HTC Excalibur and Palm. These smartphones run on operating system (OS) software that allows them to share information from a computer or other interfaces. Such operating systems make it possible for users to access their computer files, graphics, history, memory, stage and more from their cell phones.

Common Operating Systems for Smartphones

1. Linux is one of the oldest operating systems in use and it is completely free. This system was created by a hobbyist and wasn’t taken seriously for many years, but it is still around and considered one of the best shareware programs.

2. Mac OSX is Apple’s version of a graphic operating system. It is a high-functioning program that turns a regular cell phone into a high-tech smartphone.

3. Solaris is Microsystem’s platform supported by Dell, HP and IBM. It is a trusted name in computers and smartphones. It works on a variety of interfaces to meet the growing demand for mobile PC usage.

4. Palm OS is based on the PDAs that hit the market in 1996. It is exceptional at keeping information organized and makes file management and storage a breeze. It is easy to use, has high graphic resolution, and uses a touch- screen model.

5. Microsoft Windows is probably the most recognized of the OS software programs. It makes Internet use on-the-go a reality.

Will Smartphones Replace Laptops or Home Computers?

Smartphones are high-end technical gadgets that are convenient because they combine cell phone features with organization and Internet access. New versions with improved features and greater capacity continue to emerge. Smartphones probably won’t replace laptops or home computers, though. As intelligent and sophisticated as smartphones are, they are not practical for long-term use. Smartphones are great supplemental tools for business, home office and entertainment purposes. But try spending eight hours in front of a tiny screen, reading, texting, copying or any other tasks you would normally do on your computer. It would not be a pleasant experience.

The Future of Smartphones

The future of smartphones is promising. We can look forward to increased battery power, larger memory capacity, the ability to watch TV and movies on the phone and the ability to be connected anytime, anywhere. Aside from better functionality, smartphones will be available in a variety of versions to appeal to a wider audience. As the competition for smartphones increases, the prices are dropping and they are becoming more accessible to everyone.

Are you preparing to trade in your PDA and cellphone for a Smartphone? Here are the basics…

A Smartphone is basically a cellphone and PDA combined, allowing regular phone communication along with email and text messaging. Internet, fax, and data transfers between your office computer and the Smartphone are also included. There are some pros and cons to consider when preparing to switch over to the Smartphone solution:

Smartphone Internet Makes it Easier

Carrying just a Smartphone, there’s one less thing to lose. You have Internet access to check email, search for directions, or quickly find info. Scaled-down versions of popular computer applications are available. You use a keyboard instead of a phone pad, making it easier to type longer messages with ease.

Some Things to Consider About the Smartphone

The initial investment is about three times as much as a regular mobile phone including the additional fees for the network service access which supports Smartphone features. If you’re hooked on a small mobile phone, the Smartphone may seem large and awkward for calling. It may take a bit of time to get used to using the Smartphone. It can be a bit difficult to read text-heavy messages on the smaller screen. Navigating around the Smartphone and using all of the features requires a bit of a learning curve. Ready to invest in a Smartphone? Which one will you buy and what factors affect your decision?

Selecting the Right Service Contract is Critical

Before purchasing hardware, examine the plans that various service providers are offering very carefully. If you plan to purchase the hardware and plan together, you may get a good discount. Evaluate your plan coverage and usage fees as charges can be costly. It’s important to know exactly what the terms are before the first the bill arrives.

Then Choose Your Smartphone Model

After selecting a plan which suits you, your choice of a Smartphone model will be narrowed. Which features are unnecessary for you? The MP3 player and camera may be nice to have, but the big files could clog up memory and make browsing the Internet very slow.

Is the Smartphone Really for You?

Allow some time to play around with the device, to make sure your Smartphone is easy to use. If it isn’t, you may want to add a Bluetooth device to the set-up. Consider the weight of the Smartphone. It’s nice to have lots of memory, but is the device so unpleasant to carry that you wouldn’t use it? Look at how things are organized on the Smartphone. Does it make sense o you? Can you to find what you want? You may consider purchasing additional software for your Smartphone to customize it to your personal style.

Smartphone Synchronicity

Now that you have a Smartphone, there is free software available; but the standard for Smartphone synching appears to be Microsoft Windows Mobile for Smartphones 5.0. For a review of the Smartphones packaged with Microsoft Windows Mobile, visit Microsoft online.

Cell phones are not an advanced gadget on the scene. It was developed in 1947 in the form of a car mobile phone. The hypothesis of cellular phone was produced by Bell Laboratories with the permission of FCC (Federal Communication Commission), and had everything to do with broadcasting and sending a radio or television message out over the airwaves. There was a scientist who gave a advanced shape to the same accessory. Dr Martin Cooper, a former general manager in Motorola, made the basic call on a portable cell phone in nineteen seventy-three.

The premier ever cell phone was very ample and bulky. It resembled a radio frequency accessory. The weight of Motorola’s introductory cell phone was 2 pounds. Presently, the structure of cell phones has evolved to match the style and comfort of the user. It is uncomplicated to tailor cell phones by choosing its features and functions for one’s comfort. There are phone covers that change the face and design of the contraption. Various accessories are available such as car chargers, belt clips, phone covers, data cables and etc.

Cell phones emerged as a apparatus of luxury, but presently it plays a much bigger and considerable role. One can gather wireless Internet service through your cell phone, with web and email capability. A cell phone with a mini web browser can relief retrieve web emails and chat while you are on the move. A extraordinary kind of browser is used for surfing the net on a small cell phone screen. If internet use is a must, make sure that when buying a cell phone you make the choice for graphic browser capability instead of a text-based browser. In addition, if you think you will browse the wireless Internet often, you may desire to consider buying a cell phone with a larger than average display size.

There are International websites that allow sending mails, without having a computer. All you need is a basic GPRS enabled mobile phone and you can access your mail on your cell phone anytime and anywhere. It seems that cell phones have become a bed-side essential for us today. It is no longer a device of entertainment. From local weather forecast in the morning to your loved ones valuable night messages, it keeps you connected all the time.

With cell phones becoming a gadget with all the modern technology, its theft is growing across the world. In a survey in the UK, a cell phone is stolen every three minutes. In the United States, the statistics are very analogous. By keeping a note on the IMES identification that each phone has, you can trace a phone. This is quite the tedious process. The IMES code is individual to each cell phone and when you lose your phone, you can refer the code to your network provider as well as handset provider and trace back the cell phone, or at least block the applications in the phone. The person who stole the cell phone can’t use it after the IMES code is blocked.

Cell phones have become a very popular consumer electronic product. With the availability of internet connection, cell phone as broaden even deeper its options of uses. You must also note that GPS capability is a life saver for tracking cell phone users who are in emergency situations.

Cell phone usage has become a necessity of life. People cannot live without their cell phone. What was once considered a luxury item in the early days, cell phones are a must have item at every waking moment.

Cell phone is a wireless, portable, long-range, electronic telephone, which during travel can seamlessly change antenna connections, from one radio reception cell to another radio reception cell, without dropping or losing the ongoing call.

Besides the standard voice function of a telephone, latest cell phones have features such as SMS for text messages, MMS for multimedia messages, radio, games, internet connectivity for email, browsing, blogging, music (MP3) playback, memo recording, built-in cameras and camcorders, ringtones, personal organizers, Push-to-Talk (PTT), Bluetooth and infrared connectivity, call registers, streaming video, downloading video, video call, and also serve as wireless modems for PCs that can be connected to the Internet.

The power in a cell phone is obtained from rechargeable batteries, which can be recharged from the mains, a USB port or a cigarette lighter port in an automobile. Nickel Metal Hydride were the most common types of batteries, which due to the “memory effect” (the user can recharge only when the entire battery is drained off) were replaced by Lithium-Ion batteries, which did not suffer from any memory effect.

Cell phones came into existence because of the invention of hexagonal cells in 1947, for the base stations by Bell Labs engineers at AT&T. This was further developed during the 1960s by Bell Labs. During a call, the channel frequency could not be changed automatically from one cell (base station coverage area) to another cell (base station coverage area) as the person traveled from the area of one cell to the area of another cell. Amos Joel of Bell Labs invented a breakthrough invention and called it as the `call handoff` by which the channel frequency could be changed automatically from one cell to another cell, during the same call, as the mobile user traveled from one cell to another cell. Due to their heavy construction, these phones were used mainly in automobiles.

The first practical cell phone in a non-vehicle setting, and which could be handheld, was invented by Martin Cooper, the General Manager (Communications Division) of Motorola, who made the world`s first handheld cell phone call on April 3, 1973.

The technology by which the cell phone works depends on the mobile phone operator; however, all of them use electromagnetic radio waves, which are in touch with a cell site (base station). The base station is composed of several antennas which are mounted on a pole, tower, or building. Cell sites are spread at a distance of 5 to 8 miles (approx. 8 to 13 km) from each other. The low power transceiver from the cell phone transmits the voice and data to the nearest cell site. During movement, the cell phone will “handoff” the information to other cell site. Mobile phone operators use many technologies to maintain the smooth stream of digitized data from the cell phone to the cell site and vice versa.

The wireless telephone technologies are grouped under heads known as generations, starting from zero generation or 0G. The current generation going on is 4G; however, there are old cell phones that still operate on 1G, 2G, and 3G technologies.

Frequency bands: SMR, Cellular, PCS

The impact of cell phone usage on human health has been of considerable worldwide concern. Research studies in Copenhagen, from the Danish Institute of Cancer Epidemiology, the National Cancer Institute, and the Institute of Cancer Research, do not establish any link between cancer and cell phone usage. However, an intergovernmental agency IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer) forming part of the World Health Organization of the United Nations, undertook a study of 4,500 users and found a statistically significant link between cell phone usage and tumor frequency. Further research is going on.

Cell phone usage and driving is a common worldwide phenomenon. Some jurisdictions have banned usage of hand-held phones during driving, but allowed the hands-free fashion of cell phone usage while driving. However, studies have found out that the distraction is caused by the conversation itself; hence, both hand-held and hands-free cell phones contribute towards road traffic accidents. Further studies on cell phone usage and driving are going on.

Nokia Corporation is currently the world`s largest manufacturer of cell phones. Other notable cell phone manufacturers, in alphabetical order, are 3G, Audiovox (now UT Starcom), Benefon, BenQ-Siemens, Fujitsu, High Tech Computer Corporation (HTC), Kyocera, LG Mobile, Motorola, NEC, Panasonic (Matsushita Electric), Pantech Curitel, Philips, Research In Motion, Sagem, Samsung, Sanyo, Sharp, Siemens, Sierra Wireless, SK Teletech, Sony Ericsson, T&A Alcatel, Toshiba, and Verizon.

Cell phone has become one of the basic essentials among the techno-savvies irrespective of their profession and life style. Most people are using cell phone in place of a landline connection primarily due to their portability.

However, the handy device needs proper care and attention for consistency with its performance. When it comes to cell phone performance, the first thing that comes to our mind is the battery of a cell phone which forms the vital part of the device.

The functionality of the cell phone battery can be decided from two aspects- the interval between the charges and the life of the battery on a whole.

To increase the life of the battery between charges:

The simplest way is to switch the cell off when you do not want to receive a call, for instance at nights or after business hours or at times when your cell phone is out of coverage area. In an area where there is poor or no signal the cell may search for a better connection consuming much battery power.

Use ring tones of your cell phone instead of using the vibration mode and try to keep the volume as low as possible. The vibrate function eats up much battery power making the battery run down of power faster.

Flash photography, connection to internet and Bluetooth device drain the battery quicker. Hence, switching off the unnecessary features when not in use can save the power of your cell phone battery. WiFi and GPS enabled cell phone are also more prone to higher battery consumption and should be turned off.

Well, limiting the talk time over cell phone is healthy for both the battery and you as well. Longer call results in more consumption of battery.

Use the GSM mode of the cell phone in stead of using it in 3G/Dual mode.

Turn off the back light of your cell phone.

Extend the Life of Cell phone Battery:

The new battery should be initialized properly. Charge the new battery completely before installing it into the cell phone.

Keep the cell phone in room temperature as much as possible. Exposure to excessive heat may deter the battery to last long and perform properly. Moreover, try to keep the battery cool.

It is very important to charge the cell phone battery properly according to its type. The nickel-based batteries need to be discharged completely once in every two to three weeks and then recharged again. The lithium ion batteries should be discharged till the low battery warning. Recharge it before the battery is completely drained out. However, it is important to use cell phone charger meant for the type of battery.

Storing the battery properly is another vital thing. Store it away from any metal and make sure that the cell phone battery is not exposed to moisture.

The battery contact should be cleaned in regular time interval as they accumulate dirt over time.

No matter how much care you take of your cell phone battery, it is sure to die and decrease its performance sooner or later. You can ask the manufacturer to get it refurbished. Some of the cell phones have a `Battery Save` option that can be turned on to increase the life span of the battery. Ensure that the temperature inside a car is not high if you are using a car charger to recharge your cell phone.

When you are using delicate gadgets like cell phone, it is essential to take proper care of it. The cell phone battery is one of the delicate parts of the cell phone and its performance depends largely on the way you take care of it. However, charging the cell phone in a proper way is the important aspect of battery care that will ensure prolonged life for your cell phone battery.

Just a few years ago we were carrying around those big, heavy lumps of plastic. If you walked down any sidewalk in any city, all you would see was the antennae sticking up as people valiantly tried to talk as they walked. Thankfully, it wasn’t long before cell phones became smaller, neater and with a much improved signal. Then came sms messaging, picture messaging, then video calling and now we have a range of cell phones that act as a mobile office, these are smartphones.

These are exactly what their name suggests; they are very smart. You still have all your normal cell phone functions, but you also have full internet access, email, a QWERTY keypad, fax facility and the Microsoft office suite. These new generation phones are an essential item for today’s businessmen, but are becoming more and more popular with techno geeks who want to get their hands on the latest bit of kit.

The first ever smartphone was unveiled by IBM in 1992, and shown as a concept product at COMDEX, a trade how in Nevada. It was called ‘Simon’ and released to the general public a year later by BellSouth. Its main features were a world clock, a calendar, an address book and notepad, email and the ability to send and received fax. It was also the first phone with a touch screen. Compared to today’s phones, Simon was a fairly low end product, but at the time its technology was outstanding.

The other manufacturers were keen to get in on the act, and it wasn’t long before they started to produce their own smartphones. The Nokia 900 range brought out the Nokia communicator in 1996. This was marketed as a ‘computer in the palm of your hand’. The Nokia 9210 was the first true smartphone, with a full color screen and independent operating system, although Nokia continued to call it a communicator, which made it sound like it had less capabilities than it actually did. The 9500 then came out, with an integrated camera and Wi-Fi facility.

In 2002, the world of smartphones changed forever with the arrival of the first blackberry. This phone had absolutely everything you could want to run your business on the move. It was the first phone to optimize wireless email. Within 5 years it has an estimated 8 million users, 3/4 of which were in North America.

The latest inception into this growing market is the I-phone. This phone can download smartphone applications directly from the Apple App store. This gives you the luxury of picking and choosing exactly what you want on your phone. This is great for users who don’t want a phone clogged up with loads of applications that they won’t use.

The seven main operating systems found on smartphones are Symbian OS, Blackberry, Windows mobile, I-phone OS, Palm webOS, Linux and Android. By far, the phones with the Symbian system led the way with over 50% of the global market.

As technology is continuously improving, who knows what the next generation of smartphones will give us. It’s hard to imagine what else there could possibly be to add to a phone, but these technology giants will no doubt think of something.</p

When you compare smartphones there are a variety of things to take into consideration, including functionality, user-friendliness, size, price, and more. A smartphone is a great tool and offers many benefits to the user, whether for professional use or personal. The key, however, is to find the one that meets your needs and wants, and does so for the best price possible.

If you are not all that familiar with smartphones, it may be helpful to understand just what they are all about. A smartphone is, in a nutshell, a cell phone and miniature computer all-in-one, that can fit in your pocket. Some of the best smart phones on the market today can virtually replace laptops for both business and personal use. So we are talking about an extremely powerful tool which can offer a great deal of convenience. As far as major brands go, some of the best smart phones available today can be found in brands like Blackberry, Apple, HTC, Nokia, Palm, Samsung etc. These companies and smartphones have established reputations for good quality, of course there are always exceptions.

With that in mind, here are four things to look for when comparing smartphones:

1. Functionality – Everybody likes to have tools, gadgets, equipment, etc. that have lots of functions. In fact, this is most likely the primary reason you want to get a smartphone and are comparing different ones. There are many different choices out there, but most of the newer ones offer cameras, music, videos, web browsing, file transferring, Wi-Fi, GPS, and a great deal more. And the very best smart phones can perform these functions faster than ever before. We are a “gotta have it now culture” and speed is important.

2. User Friendliness – Cool tools and functions are great, but if the smartphone is too complicated to use in a quick and easy manner, it may not be the right one for you. When you compare smartphones, ideally you are probably going to want one that makes it easy to access and use all the different tools available, and does it without any kind of glitches or problems. If it has a keyboard, you want it to one that is quick and easy to use. One thing to keep in mind, the smaller the keyboard the harder it will be to avoid typos. If it has a touchscreen, does the smartphone repond readily to the touch, or do you have to continuously push at the icon or use your stylus all the time? Things to consider. The layout of keyboard, touchscreen, D-pad, and other functional buttons is also important. the smaller the phones get, the more bunched together some of these buttons become, and this can make it easier to hit the wrong buttons, icon, etc. which can lead to frustrations and headaches.

3. Size – Size matters! This is especially true when it comes to things like computers, phones, and all sorts of electronic and digital gadgets. We want ever-increasing speed and power, but in an eve-decreasing package. So, when you compare smartphones size is important. Questions you might consider: Is it too bulky to easily carry in a pocket or handbag? How big is the display? How small is too small, i.e. some of the problems addressed in “user-friendliness.” Small is good when it comes to smartphones, but you do not want it so small that it makes your experience something less than positive.

4. Price – Unfortunately, price is a big factor for most of us. Most smartphones, for what they have to offer, come with a relatively inexpensive price. The key when shopping for a smartphone isto figure out exactly what you need first. This includes tools, features, functions, and benefits. Then you need to decide what other features and functions you would like but are not necessities. Finally, do a little reasearch into specific phones, find a few fits, and then look for the best prices available (more on that later).

There you have it, four key things to look for when you compare smartphones. Of course there are other things to look at as well, including looks, materials, brand names, reputations, carriers, etc. But these four areas should give you a good feel for what you need, want, and are ultimately looking for.
